Local News in Brief : Bus Yard Plan Dropped

Share

The Southern California Rapid Transit District board of directors has voted unanimously to abandon a plan backed by City Councilwoman Ruth Galanter to build a bus maintenance facility on the site of a drive-in theater in Westchester.

The proposed yard was promoted as a state-of-the-art, fully enclosed depot with direct bus access to the adjacent San Diego Freeway, but it drew criticism from residents of the Ladera Heights community across the street, who complained that it would give the area the image of a “bus maintenance yard neighborhood.”

The project would have replaced the RTD’s three-acre bus yard at Sunset Avenue and Main Street in Venice, where neighbors have complained about noise and diesel fumes from buses.

The board’s 7-0 vote revives plans to build the bus yard west of the drive-in on the Lopez Ranch, a produce farm at Jefferson and Grosvenor boulevards. Those plans ran into neighborhood opposition and last spring drew a campaign pledge from Galanter to find another site for the bus yard.
