A single-engine plane lost power after takeoff Sunday and crashed in a Torrance neighborhood, injuring the pilot and two passengers, police said.

The Piper four-seater hit some trees before it landed in the front yard of a home in the 23300 block of Audrey Avenue, police said. The home is the residence of James A. Cronin, president and chief operating officer of Flying Tiger Line, a Los Angeles air cargo carrier.

Pilot Gregory Howlind, 40, and his two passengers, Patrick Carmody, 25, and Brenda Boulter, 24, all of Redondo Beach, were treated at Torrance Memorial Hospital Medical Center for minor injuries, Torrance Police Lt. Wally Murker said.

The three took off about 6 a.m. from Torrance Airport for “a pleasure flight over the Channel Islands,” Murker said. “The plane is probably a total loss. They are very lucky,” he said.

National Transportation Safety Board officials were investigating the crash.
