ZURICH, Switzerland — The popular Swiss ski resort of Zermatt was virtually cut off for 24 hours by an avalanche and heavy snow over the weekend, resort officials said. About 500 people were taken out by helicopter on Saturday, while 1,200 waiting to get in were housed in Civil Defense shelters in nearby towns. Road and rail links were restored on Sunday.
