A private security guard who surprised a transient sleeping in a Pasadena office building early Monday shot and killed the intruder during a struggle, police said.

The unidentified 51-year-old man was shot at close range by the security guard, a 27-year-old woman whose name was being withheld, as they wrestled in the dark at 127 N. Madison Ave. shortly before 1 a.m., Pasadena police said.

The guard, who works for the Optimum Patrol Agency, was using a flashlight to find her way through the darkened office when she found “this guy sleeping in one of the (inner) offices,” Sgt. Ronald Reinke said. The man woke up, approached the guard and wrestled a radio away from her as she tried to call for help, he said.

The intruder hit the guard on the head with the radio and tried to grab her .38-caliber revolver, Lt. Gregg Henderson said. During the struggle, the guard fired one shot, hitting the man in the chest. He died at the scene.
