A driver was arrested today in a spectacular seven-car accident that injured two pedestrians, one critically, flattened two light poles and tied up traffic at a downtown intersection for nearly two hours, police reported.

Police said the accident was reported at 8:17 a.m. at busy Post and Kearney streets. At the scene, police said, a driver tried to flee but was chased and captured by a parking officer. At San Francisco General Hospital, pedestrian John Svendson, 45, was reported to have critical head injuries and a broken leg; his wife, Patience, 48, was less seriously hurt.
