Reagan Ready to Campaign for Bush, White House Says
President Reagan is ready to campaign for George Bush, convinced that his vice president has the Republican presidential nomination sewed up, White House spokesman Marlin Fitzwater said today.
Reagan’s stumping for Bush would end his official policy of neutrality in the GOP presidential primary race.
Asked at a news briefing whether the President plans to continue remaining neutral until the Republican National Convention in August in New Orleans, Fitzwater said that “in view of the vice president’s seemingly assured nomination . . . the realities could see the President involved in the campaign.
“It’s not a final decision” on Reagan’s part, he said, “but . . . there could well be some political activities” before the GOP convention that would involve Reagan.
“Pat Robertson is still in the race,” he added but suggested that the former television evangelist has no chance of capturing the nomination.
