Journalistic Sexism

Ithink the Ventura County edition has really been wonderful! You are doing a nice job.

However, as the first chair of the Ventura County Commission for Women, I cannot let you get away with blatant sexism. Notice the article about the race for county Board of Supervisors: Only the two women had their ages put in the paper! Not one of the four men listed in the article had their ages published. This is totally unfair.

Please alert your writers to be fair to both sexes. Do it for both or not at all. You might even ask yourself the question: What does age matter? Aren’t they all adults? Could age bias the reader? Do you stereotype a person by unconsciously putting him or her into a certain age bracket? Just food for thought.
