Playa del Rey : Meeting on Garbage Plant

Share

A proposal to build a garbage plant near Playa del Rey will be discussed at a public meeting at 7 p.m. April 13 at the Westchester office of City Councilwoman Ruth Galanter, 7166 W. Manchester Ave.

Members of Galanter’s staff and representatives of the city Bureau of Sanitation will attend the meeting.

City officials are considering construction of a co-composting plant to reduce the amount of garbage that must be buried in scarce landfill sites. Vacant Los Angeles International Airport property at Pershing Drive and Sandpiper Street and at Pershing Drive and Imperial Highway are possible sites for the plant.

Co-composting is a process in which household garbage and sewage sludge are mixed and treated to form a compost that may be sold as a soil additive or can be made into a building material.

A City Council committee this week postponed for 60 days a vote on whether to contract for an environmental impact report on the proposal.
