Local News in Brief : Westminster : Court Approves Printing of Ballot Arguments
An Orange County Superior Court judge Thursday rejected the city’s pleas to block printing of arguments for a rent-control initiative on the June 7 ballot, arguments that city officials have asserted were “false and misleading.”
In a lawsuit filed March 17, the city clerk contended that advocates of an initiative to control rents in Westminster’s mobile home parks had made “false and misleading” statements in their official arguments to be distributed with sample ballots.
The city objected to statements that the measure “would not cost taxpayers one penny” and that City Council members had “turned a deaf ear to elderly citizens,” many of whom live in mobile home parks.
City officials argued that the proposed ordinance would cost thousands of dollars to defend in court, and that the elected City Council did listen to the concerns of the elderly.
Nonetheless, Judge Gary L. Taylor denied the city’s motion, allowing the arguments as submitted to be printed on the sample ballots.
