Local News in Brief : 38 on Chatsworth Scout Trip Rescued From Arizona Lake
Members and leaders of a Chatsworth Boy Scout troop were rescued unhurt Wednesday by sheriff’s deputies after their canoes capsized in Arizona’s Lake Havasu, authorities said.
Twenty-seven Boy Scouts and 11 adult leaders were on a seven-day canoe trip during the area’s peak windy season, said Frances Thompson, a Mohave County Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman.
The lake was calm when the troop started out in the morning, Thompson said. Winds of up to 40 m.p.h. began buffeting their boats about 10:30 a.m., she said. The group was about 2 miles off shore on the man-made lake when 4-foot swells overturned their 16 canoes, Thompson said. “The water was just too rough for the canoes out there,” she said.
The boys and the men, who all wore life jackets, were rescued by 12:45 p.m. by deputies from Mohave County and San Bernardino County, Calif. Other boaters on the lake at the time also helped rescue the troop, Thompson said.
Camping equipment and some Scout leaders’ valuables were lost in the accident.
The troop returned to Chatsworth late Wednesday.
