A 22-year-old El Cajon man was shot in the head on the eastbound lanes of Interstate 8 Friday morning by an irate driver, police there said.

Erick J. Drummond was in good condition Friday afternoon at Grossmont Hospital, spokeswoman Nancy Godson said.

She said Drummond suffered a superficial gunshot wound.

El Cajon Police Officer Joel Hernandez said Drummond was approaching the 2nd Street off-ramp on Interstate 8 when he decided to switch lanes. Drummond apparently cut off another car.

“The car behind him was honking and coming up close to his car,” Hernandez said. “The driver appeared angry.”

Moments later, Hernandez said, the other car pulled up to the left of Drummond’s car and the driver pulled out what Drummond described as a black pipe.

A bullet from a .22-caliber handgun grazed Drummond’s head as the driver of the other car continued eastbound on the freeway, Hernandez said.

Drummond managed to drive to his Fletcher Hills home and his grandfather took him to Grossmont Hospital, Hernandez said.

The bullet was fired from an older-model Ford Pinto with gray primer and tainted windows on the rear sides and back, Hernandez said.

The driver was described as a white man, between 30 to 40 years of age, with dark hair and a dark beard 6 to 8 inches in length. The man also wore sunglasses, Hernandez said.
