Authorities arrested 52 anti-nuclear activists in a Good Friday protest at the Nevada Test Site as a 47-day vigil at the desert testing grounds began to wind down.

Energy Department spokesman Jim Boyer said 167 demonstrators were on hand Friday morning for what has become an annual Good Friday protest.

Those arrested were cited for misdemeanor trespass, held briefly, then released. Most were cited for crossing a cattle guard on a road leading to the test site gates, 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas.

Boyer said 11 of the 52 people who were arrested returned to the cattle guard and were arrested a second time later in the morning.

More than 2,000 arrests have been recorded at the test site since the latest demonstration began in February. Many of the protesters were arrested several times during a 10-day demonstration last month dubbed “Reclaim the Test Site.”

The activities are scheduled to end Easter Sunday.
