Hunter Castigated
Rep. Duncan Hunter continues to distinguish himself as a politician lacking vision, social conscience and good sense. Recently, Congress voted to override President Reagan’s veto of the Civil Rights Restoration Act. That act was passed in response to a Supreme Court ruling that enabled institutional recipients of the public’s money to discriminate against the elderly, handicapped, women and minorities.
The Supreme Court decision permitted universities, and other institutions, to discriminate against the elderly in one department while still receiving federal tax dollars as an institution. The Civil Rights Restoration Act gives the federal government the power to withdraw all funding from a university if one department discriminates against women, for example. It forces the institution to police its own house or lose federal funding.
President Reagan has never distinguished himself as one who empathizes with the discriminated. Fortunately, Republicans of both the House and Senate deserted the President on this issue.
That is, except for Congressman Hunter. His short-sightedness continues. His voting record reflects that he has no understanding of civil rights issues. His tenure in Congress exhibits a lack of awareness and a lack of good judgment.
