Off-Road Bicyclists and the Environment

I read your article glamorizing off-road cycling (“Hard Pedaling It,” March 25) with feelings of disgust.

As a runner and a longtime user of the El Moro Canyon and Crystal Cove area trails, I have been witness to the dramatic trail erosion and other decay that have set in with the rising use of off-road bicycles.

The effect is not much different from the trail abuse common when off-road motorcycling was the rage.

Your glamorization of this activity is utterly incomprehensible, considering that the rapid urbanization of Orange County will leave few such wilderness areas readily available.

While this latest hip trend is just a passing fancy for those jumping on the bandwagon, there are others of us who wish to continue using the trails for years to come.
