Local News in Brief : Tustin : Car Flips Into Channel, Killing Santa Ana Man

A 20-year-old Santa Ana man was fatally injured Sunday morning when the car he was driving swerved off Irvine Boulevard near Jamboree Road, flew into the air and landed in a flood-control channel, authorities said.

The victim was identified as Jose Cortes. Tustin police said he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers said Cortes was westbound on Irvine Boulevard in Tustin about 9:20 a.m. traveling in excess of 50 m.p.h.

According to a police spokesman, the car “abruptly swerved to the left, jumping the center concrete divider.” It then shot across the boulevard and struck the north curbing, the spokesman said.

After hitting the curbing, the car flew into the air and landed in the flood control channel on the north side of Irvine Boulevard, police said. The driver was alone in the car, and no other vehicles were involved in the accident.
