Local News in Brief : Funds OKd to Widen, Resurface State Road
The California Transportation Commission has allocated $2.6 million to widen San Fernando Road from two to four lanes and refinish the surface between 5th Street and Sierra Highway in the city of Santa Clarita.
Oak Creek Bridge also will be replaced as part of the project, and shoulders will be added to the road for bicycle traffic.
The road improvements are expected to begin in August and be completed within a year.
San Fernando Road--which is also part of State 126--is the major north-south road serving the Santa Clarita Valley.
Rapid growth in the area has led to traffic congestion and delays on the existing road, officials said. Santa Clarita Valley Transportation Committee members and other residents long have sought improvements for the thoroughfare.
