Eighty years old today and almost crippled by spinal trouble, Austrian conductor Herbert von Karajan, is still hard at work on the podium and in high-tech studios, recording himself for posterity on compact discs. He has recorded more than 900 albums (four times as many as Toscanini), of which the 330 made for Deutsche Gramophon have sold more than 115 million copies.
