Share

Issues facing Latin American cultures will be highlighted at a cultural awareness symposium, “Encuentros,” at California Lutheran University today and Friday.

Sabia, a band whose music is rooted in Latino tradition, will be on stage today at 8 p.m. singing original songs about political freedom, justice and human rights. Tickets are $4 and are available at the door.

On Friday, a 10 a.m. panel discussion on “The New Californians” will include several experts discussing immigration. A musical duo, Mario y Martin, will perform music of the Andes before the discussion outside the Preus-Brandt Forum, and again at noon in Kingsmen Park.

Several free workshops, including “Life After Amnesty,” and “Nicaragua Today” will be presented beginning at 1:30 p.m. in the Forum.

El Salvadoran food will be for sale outside the Forum from noon to 1 p.m. Crafts will be displayed and sold in the foyer of CLU’s Pearson Library from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

A form of Chilean tapestry art called arpilleras also will be exhibited at the library through April 15. Symbols of political protest are woven into the arpilleras, whose display is forbidden in Chile.
