Noise Fight Reheating : Coming Acts Not Noisiest

Share

The acts announced so far for the Pacific Amphitheatre’s 1988 concert season do not represent a particularly fearsome bunch when it comes to breaking eardrums.

Only a handful of the 27 scheduled performers (with an expected 10 to 20 more concerts still to be announced) are in the decibel-dealing league of Yes and Kiss, the two early-season rock headliners whose sound output raised neighbors’ ire last month.

Residents who found those shows intolerable might consider weekending away from home on June 3-4, when Heart and INXS, two bands that play all-out rock, will be heading the bill. Neil Young & Crazy Horse (Sept. 18) and Hank Williams Jr. (Aug. 12) are two other acts that feature high amplification.

Others who might generate a respectable amount of sound output, but who don’t really have a reputation for being especially loud, are the Beach Boys (May 21), Hall & Oates (July 14) and the Moody Blues (Aug. 26). Bob Dylan (July 31) normally would fall in this category, but he is expected to be playing acoustic sets on this tour.

A number of headliners perform at middling volume: Chicago (Sept. 16), Spyro Gyra (Aug.19), Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea (June 10), and the Miami Sound Machine (Aug. 27). Pop’s mellower set is strongly represented in a lineup that includes the likes of Dan Fogelberg (June 5), Linda Ronstadt (June 25-26) and James Taylor (Sept. 3).
