Panel to Consider Lion Hunts
The California Fish and Game Commission is meeting in Long Beach today to decide 1988-89 mammal and hunting regulations, including whether to allow hunting of mountain lions.
The commission last year voted to grant 190 permits to hunt lions, but environmental groups took the commission to court and succeeded in blocking the hunt for the season.
“We have every indication that there are at least 5,000 mountain lions in the state,” said Curt Taucher, spokesman for the Fish and Game Commission. “The fact that they continually encroach into public territory backs the theory that the lion population is very healthy and growing.”
Environmentalists, on the other hand, argue that it is urban developers who encroach on wildlife populations and habitats.
The hearing will take place at 8 a.m. at the Long Beach City Council auditorium.
