The Tokyo area’s first April snowstorm in 14 years snarled rush-hour traffic today and destroyed cherry blossoms at the height of the viewing season.

Six inches of snow fell on central Tokyo by early morning, a Meteorological Agency official said.

Several trains were stopped or slowed as power lines were cut by the weight of wet spring snow.

Cherry blossoms coming into bloom were frozen or fell off trees under the weight of snow, disappointing those with weekend plans to observe the Japanese spring tradition of drinking sake under cherry trees while viewing the blossoms.
