A proposed widening of Laguna Canyon Road and realignment of the notorious “Big Bend” curve comes before the California Coastal Commission again Wednesday in Marina del Rey. The commission voted in February to reject a Caltrans proposal to widen the road, but the Orange County Transportation Commission later asked the state agency to reconsider its decision.

County and Caltrans officials contend that the road is unsafe, while opponents of the proposed widening say it would bring too many people through the canyon and could lead to more development. If the appeal fails, the county commission said recently that it would attempt to hand over to Laguna Beach the 2 1/2-mile stretch of road between El Toro Road and Coast Highway. That would free up money budgeted to widen the road for other projects.
