Wilson, Young Win Twice as UCLA Beats Kansas, Iowa in 3-Way Meet

David Wilson broke his month-old school record in the hammer throw and also won the shotput, and Kevin Young won both hurdles races Saturday as UCLA easily beat Kansas and Iowa in a triangular track meet at Drake Stadium.

UCLA scored 120 points, Kansas 37 and Iowa 14.

Wilson threw the hammer 215 feet 3 inches, breaking the record of 212-9 he set March 12. He won the shotput with a personal best of 61-2.

Young won the 110-meter hurdles in a season-best 13.8 seconds and the 400-meter hurdles in a meet-record 50.27.

Craig Watcke of Kansas also was a double winner, placing first in the 1,500 meters in 3:46.66 and the two mile in 9:04.28.

In the pole vault, Kansas sophomore Pat Manson was the winner at 18-3. Mike Tully, the 1984 Olympic silver medalist who was competing unattached, vaulted 18-10 and then missed three attempts at 19-2, which would have been a personal best.
