It’s Election Day for voters in Del Mar and the Poway school district, with polls open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
In Del Mar, voters will decide four ballot issues and select three City Council members from among six candidates.
Measure A would maintain the hotel-motel tax at 8%. The council increased it from 6% in February, 1986. The vote is required under statewide Proposition 62, passed in November, 1986; if Measure A fails, the hotel-motel tax will revert to 6%.
Measure B would maintain the admissions fee at 10% for certain events at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. It was increased from 7% in 1986; the vote also is required by Proposition 62.
Measure C would establish a $300-a-month salary for previously unpaid City Council members.
Measure D would require all seawalls and protective barriers built more than 5 feet west of beachfront property lines to be torn down.
The measures need a simple majority to pass.
Candidates for council are Mayor Ronnie Delaney, 43, a self-employed property manager; Jan McMillan, 46, a writer; H.K. (Swede) Throneson, 71, a retired Marine officer and civic volunteer; Mark Livingston, 38, a certified public accountant; Gay Hugo, 45, an assistant U.S. attorney, and Jacqueline Winterer, 51, a research geologist.
Delaney is the only incumbent. The other seats are now held by Lew Hopkins and Scott Barnett, who are not seeking re-election.
In Poway school district, voters will cast ballots on a $58.4-million bond issue, to be repaid through property taxes. The money will be used to help build a high school, a middle school and three elementary schools.
The school bond issue needs two-thirds approval for passage. The Poway school district includes Poway and adjoining parts of the city of San Diego.
