Local News in Brief : Inquiry Into Toxic Waste

Share

The discovery of toxic chemicals beneath a vacant Echo Park hotel is under investigation by a city environmental task force to determine if the chemicals pose danger to the nearby community, Los Angeles officials said Tuesday.

Perchlorethylene (PCE), used as a dry cleaning solvent, was found two weeks ago under the hotel at the southwest corner of Sunset Boulevard and Echo Park Avenue. The discovery prompted the Los Angeles Men’s Place (LAMP), a social service agency, to abandon plans to buy the hotel and use it as permanent housing for the homeless mentally ill.
