Local News in Brief : Desalination Idea Hit

Share

Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley and the City Council both sent raspberries Tuesday in the direction of the Metropolitan Water District for considering the use of nuclear power to desalinate Santa Monica Bay water.

“When I first heard about this proposal, I must confess I assumed it was a joke,” Bradley wrote in a letter to the MWD board.

The council voted 13 to 0 on a proposal to ban new nuclear reactors in the city and is expected to put the ban into effect next week.

The reason for the uproar is a decision by the MWD board to spend $300,000 on a study of coastal sites for a nuclear-powered plant that would convert seawater into drinking water. The board, which defeated a move Tuesday to reconsider, has said that such a plant could be used to ensure water supplies in the next century.
