Local News in Brief : Minority Panelists Urged

Share

A Los Angeles City Council panel recommended Tuesday that Mayor Tom Bradley appoint more people from minority areas and the San Fernando Valley to city commissions dominated by members from the Westside.

The Charter and Elections Committee voted unanimously to endorse a formula proposed by Councilman Hal Bernson that would ask the mayor to evenly distribute his appointments to the commissions among five geographical areas of the city.

“I don’t think it’s balanced the way it is now,” said Bernson, a committee member.

Bernson proposed the formula four years ago, saying his San Fernando Valley district and other valley districts were under-represented on city commissions.
