Stanford Again Is Top Fund-Raiser With $198 Million

For the second straight year, Stanford University led the nation’s colleges and universities in raising money from corporations, alumni, foundations and other private sources, according to a survey released Tuesday.

Stanford, which took first place from Harvard University in 1985, maintained its top position for the 1986-87 school year by raising $198,534,823, according to the survey by the Council for Aid to Education, a nonprofit education advocacy group. The only other California school to make the top-10 list of fund-raisers was USC, which ranked 10th with donations totaling $91,203,534 for the academic year.

Harvard raised $177,976,000 for second place nationally and Cornell University was third, with reported contributions of $149,702,435.

Among the other colleges in the top 10 are the University of Minnesota, Yale, Columbia, Washington University (St. Louis), the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Johns Hopkins University. Stanford, which is engaged in a $1.1-billion fund-raising drive, was the overwhelming leader among California schools.
