USIU Lets Loose Power to Beat Chapman, 13-9

Kevin Tahan, Scott Coutts and Ray Plantier hit home runs as United States International University beat Chapman College, 13-9, Tuesday in a nonconference baseball game in Orange.

Wally Trice (9-3) allowed five runs in seven innings to gain the victory.

USIU is 15-21-1.

Biola’s Jeff Carter allowed only one run in 9 innings, and his teammates scored twice in the 10th to beat host Point Loma Nazarene College, 3-1, in a nonconference game.

Jason Campbell had a run-scoring single, and Brad Hardan’s error allowed another run in the 10th. Dan Whitney went the distance for Point Loma Nazarene (11-24).

Biola is 18-1.

Jeff Oberdank led off the bottom of the ninth with a double to start the winning rally in UC Irvine’s 3-2 win over USD. Tracy Shanahan followed Oberdank with a single to right to put runners on first and third, so John Seeburger was intentionally walked to load the bases for pinch-hitter Jay Hawthorne. Hawthorne lined a single down the left field line to give Irvine (24-20-1) the victory over San Diego (17-24). Kevin Kandalast (5-1) picked up the victory and Irvine has won four out its last five games.

SOFTBALL

San Diego State continued to struggle as No. 12-ranked Cal Poly Pomona won, 3-0 and 5-0, in a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. doubleheader at SDSU.

The Aztecs (20-19 overall, 6-10 in conference play) have lost 10 of their last 11 games.

Dana Kuczon and Robin Long each had two hits for SDSU, which lost its top hitter and pitcher, Trish Mang, when she injured her knee March 31.

Kris Rokosz picked up a victory and hit a home run and two singles for Pomona (32-11, 10-6).

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Sondra Mitchell, Julie Tullberg, Dorey Brandt, Karyn Cooper and Michelle Apra all won in singles play as San Diego State (10-14) defeated U.S. International, 5-1. Julie LaBonte, playing at No. 3 singles, picked up USIU’s only win.

The University of San Diego blanked Cal State Long Beach, 9-0, in Long Beach.

Jennifer Larking (No. 1 singles) and Aby Brayton (No. 2 singles) were straight-set victors, then combined for a win at No. 1 doubles.

MEN’S TENNIS

Joe Thomas beat Jeff Ray, 7-6 (11-9), 6-3, at No. 1 singles to help Grossmont College to a 9-0 victory over Imperial Valley in El Centro.
