South Gate : Counterfeit Suspects Held
Two men are awaiting preliminary hearings later this month on charges of conspiracy to possess counterfeit U.S. currency after authorities recovered an estimated $1.5 million in counterfeit bills.
Darryl Lane Williams, 30, of Los Angeles and Clarence D. Malcolm, 33, of South Gate were arrested after a short vehicle chase and foot pursuit by the South Gate police.
About $1.5 million in counterfeit money, a printing machine and plates for $10, $50 and $100 bills were recovered, according to King Davis, supervisor of the counterfeit squad for the U.S. Secret Service.
Both suspects, who left their van at the end of the chase, attempted to escape by climbing over a nearby barbed-razor wire security fence and were injured, South Gate Detective Sgt. Russell Beecher said.
Some counterfeit money was discovered in the van, but most was found at a small public rented storage area at 5125 Firestone Place, Beecher said.
Williams and Malcolm are being held at the Federal Correctional Institution on Terminal Island and are scheduled to appear before the U.S. District Court, Central District, in Los Angeles on April 25 and 26, Davis said.
