A 38-year-old pipe fitter from Laguna Beach who wore a baseball cap emblazoned with the words “Top Gun Bandit” was arrested on suspicion of bank robbery, police said Wednesday.

Stephen W. Robb was taken into custody while attempting to rob the Beach Boulevard branch of California First Bank with a toy gun about 2 p.m. Tuesday, Lt. John Foster said.

Police and FBI agents had been investigating a string of bank robberies in the county during the past year and had discovered a pattern, Foster said, adding that police and FBI agents had the bank under surveillance at the time of the attempted robbery.

Robb was being questioned in connection with 15 robberies because he closely resembles a description of the man who carried out those robberies, Foster said.

Robb was booked into Orange County Jail in lieu of $50,000 bail, he said.
