Alfred P. Fernandez, chancellor of the Ventura County Community College District, has acknowledged that he is a candidate for chancellor at several other community college districts.

“I’m looking for a new challenge and new opportunities,” said Fernandez, 52, who earns $85,525 as chancellor of the district, which includes Ventura, Moorpark and Oxnard colleges.

The district is in the midst of tense salary negotiations with more than 1,000 faculty members.

Rumors in recent weeks that Fernandez is seeking another job have increased tensions, teachers say.

In an interview Tuesday, Fernandez declined to name the community college districts where he is a candidate. But, he said, “I am being recruited by a couple of large districts.”

Fernandez has been in his position for six years.

Prior to becoming chancellor at Ventura, he served from 1980 to 1982 as president of Los Angeles Mission College. From 1974 to 1980, he was dean of instruction at Ventura College.
