Local News in Brief : Amnesty Plea to Africans

Share

Thousands of Caribbean and African illegal aliens are missing out on their chance to become citizens, a community leader said Thursday in Los Angeles while announcing a drive to encourage them to apply for amnesty.

“We’re afraid that because so few have responded, they are being overlooked and missed,” said Celes King III, state chairman of the Congress of Racial Equality.

Noting that “there is a very short time” before the end of the Immigration and Naturalization Service’s amnesty program, King said “it’s our intention to go out and beat the bushes and make sure everyone understands the options they have.”

Although there are no solid statistics on how many such illegal aliens live in Southern California, King said, a CORE poll estimated that there are between 30,000 and 50,000 in Los Angeles alone.
