Some 78,000 pounds of illegally imported fish is being donated to food banks in California, the National Marine Fisheries Service announced today.

The frozen salmon was seized last year after being imported from Japan and then relabeled as a product of the United States, the agency said. After inspecting the salmon and clearing it for human consumption, the agency decided to donate it for use in shelters, day-care centers, soup kitchens and senior centers. About 26,000 pounds of salmon will go to the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank and 52,000 pounds will be divided by the San Francisco and Santa Clara County food banks.
