‘Old Well’
China, 1987, 105 minutes , 5:45 p.m. In a remote Chinese village the elements of tradition and the forces of modernism collide as geological methods are introduced to find water in a centuries-dry well. There’s an intermittent thread of humor running underneath the surface story in the guise of stubborn, yet persistent, villagers which periodically enlivens the proceedings. However, the dominant serious tone effectively flattens the drama.
