United Airlines simplified its frequent-flier program and, in some cases, will offer awards for lower mileage requirements. As a result, it is expected that some of the carrier’s large frequent-flier liability will be whittled down. Only 20,000 miles will be needed for a free round-trip coach ticket on a domestic flight compared to the current 35,000. However, some other awards will become more expensive. United also said it will begin automatically issuing vouchers good for free travel or upgrades to members who have earned enough mileage. With the member’s approval, relatives and friends will be eligible to use the vouchers.
