A Mafia boss in Sicily, Francesco Paolo Intile, was jailed for life and 52 other mobsters were sentenced to terms totaling 415 years on charges ranging from murder to drug trafficking. Much of the evidence in the trial, held in Palermo, was based on confessions by former Mafioso Vincenzo Marsala, who sought revenge after his father, clan boss Mariano Marsala, was gunned down by rivals. In December, another Palermo court sentenced 19 mobsters to life imprisonment and imposed jail terms totaling 2,700 years on 319 others after a 22-month-long trial, the first to be held in the Mafia’s Sicilian stronghold.
