DIVORCE,L.A. STYLE

Colman-Schwimmer’s words and views attest to the often narrow framework in which some family attorneys operate. As a therapist working in the trenches, I would want Colman-Schwimmer to know that, before it starts, during the divorce process itself and after it has gone through court, it is I who wonder whether some attorneys have ever given any thought to the resettlement of my patients’ lives. After all, at often outrageous fees, attorneys deal with a hopefully short span of time in a family’s life; my job is to help these people to function within the framework of these often jolting changes over a far greater period--and at considerably less expense to them.
Proving, at the same time, that not all family attorneys are the same, I maintain a list of several whom I have gotten to know, so that the whole future of my patients and their families are properly considered.
