‘Vincent’

Australia, 1987, 99 minutes, 7:45 p.m. Director Paul Cox uses Van Gogh’s articulate, passion-filled letters to his staunch, almost saintly brother Theo as the spine of this great, wrenching portrait of the artist. As John Hurt reads the letters, the camera moves across the craters and whorls of Van Gogh’s paintings, and we come as close as film allows to inhabiting an artist’s soul. A magnificent achievement.

RECOMMENDED.
