HemaCare, a Sherman Oaks-based provider of blood products and services, reported a $55,000 profit for the first quarter, in contrast to a year-earlier loss of $118,168.

HemaCare said the profit, which equaled 2 cents a share, came on a 42% increase in revenue in the quarter ended March 31, to $1.07 million from $749,935.

The company said the improved results largely reflected a 62% jump in revenue, to $642,000 in the latest quarter, from HemaCare’s therapeutic hemapheresis treatments. The treatment, administered at a patient’s bedside, removes harmful substances from the blood. It is given to patients with such diseases as leukemia and multiple sclerosis.
