Secretary of State March Fong Eu and state Supt. of Public Instruction Bill Honig launched a weeklong campaign Monday to register eligible high school students for this year’s elections.

Eu, addressing a senior assembly at John Marshall High School in Los Angeles, where she was joined by a dozen young actors, said registration drives will be conducted at more than half the high schools in the state through Friday. “We have the potential to add 125,000 young voters to the rolls by June, plus an unknown number of their families and school employees,” Eu said. Honig said only 20% of 18-year-olds vote and voter registration among 18- to 21-year-olds is the lowest of any age bracket.

May 9 is the deadline to register. To be eligible, citizens must be 18 by the June 7 primary. Students who will be 18 by the Nov. 8 general election, a pool that includes an additional 115,000 potential voters, can sign pledges to register.
