Local News in Brief : Bernardi Loses in Court

Share

A Los Angeles Superior Court judge has ruled that the city of Irwindale need not pay $300,000 in opponents’ attorney fees in a lawsuit challenging the deal bringing the Los Angeles Raiders to the San Gabriel Valley community.

Judge Charles E. Jones turned down the request by attorneys for Los Angeles City Councilman Ernani Bernardi, who said they would appeal the decision.

Arguing against payment of the fees, Irwindale’s attorney, Kenneth Adams, noted that Bernardi’s attorneys had failed to notify the California attorney general’s office of their lawsuit before filing it and have not prevailed in their motions to block the deal.

Bernardi’s attorneys, Murray Kane and John Belsher, had initially declared that they were handling the case for Bernardi for free. Belsher said Monday that his law firm still does not intend to charge Bernardi but hopes Irwindale will be forced to pay them.
