Tahan Leads USIU Past Oral Roberts

Kevin Tahan hit two home runs and had four runs batted in Monday to lead United States International University to a 15-6 nonconference college baseball victory over visiting Oral Roberts.

Ray Plantier and Pat Rocco also hit home runs for USIU (17-23-1). Plantier’s homer was his 11th of the season, one short of tying the school record.

SOFTBALL

Valerie Finley of Valencia High School in Placentia, who catches for Pan American Games star pitcher Michele Granger, has signed a letter of intent to attend San Diego State. Finley, a 5-foot 8-inch senior, is hitting .320 for Valencia.

MEN’S TENNIS

Julio Noriega, a senior at San Diego State, has been named the Volvo Region 7 College Player of the Year and is one of eight finalists for national player of the year honors. Noriega, a native of Lima, Peru, has an 18-7 record.

MEN’S GOLF

U.S. International University’s Jim Wahl, who has already won three tournaments this year, has the first-day lead in the Rippling River Invitational being hosted by Portland State University in Welches, Ore.

Wahl’s 3-under-par 103 gave him a two-stroke lead over Bill Klienicke of Sacramento State with 27 holes to be played today.
