Manning Is Invited to Olympic Trials

Danny Manning, who led Kansas to the National Collegiate Athletic Assn. basketball championship, led a list of 93 players invited Monday to next month’s Olympic trials.

David Robinson, the 1987 college player of the year and the National Basketball Assn.’s top draft choice last year, was invited, as was Army’s Kevin Houston.

Four players were invited from Final Four teams Oklahoma and Arizona, and three players each from seven other schools were extended opportunities to make the U.S. team for the Seoul Games, beginning Sept. 17. The team will be coached by Georgetown’s John Thompson.

Arizona’s Steve Kerr, Sean Elliott, Anthony Cook and Tom Tolbert were invited, along with Oklahoma’s Mookie Blaylock, Stacey King, Davie Sieger and Harvey Grant.

The trials will begin May 18 at the Olympic Training center in Colorado Springs, Colo. On May 24, about 20 players will be invited to resume training at Georgetown in mid-July.

The final 12 players will be determined before Sept. 2.
