A mile of Market Street will be closed to taxis and cars for six months as San Francisco begins a 2 1/2-year face lift of its main downtown boulevard. The $27-million project will include replacing streetcar tracks, installing new pedestrian islands and redesigning crosswalks. From May 1 through Thanksgiving, no private traffic will be allowed on Market, and cross traffic may be limited at times to single lanes. The Municipal Railway will continue to provide full service along the street, but private vehicles will be shunted to streets south of Mission Street, according to project manager Charles H. O’Neil.
