Downey : Water Line, 3 Wells Planned

Share

The Downey City Council has voted unanimously to spend as much as $850,000 on improvements to the municipal water system. The improvements include installation of a 16-inch water main into the southeast portion of the city at a cost of about $350,000, according to William A. Ralph, director of public works. The council also authorized spending as much as $500,000 to drill three new wells.

The expanded main will help provide water for the planned Rancho Business Center on the county’s Rancho Los Amigos property. The new wells will help replenish water Downey lost when four wells were closed last year because of pollution.

Ralph said the city hopes to drill the first well by August and have the new distribution line completed by late fall. The improvements will be financed through the city’s water fund, which is expected to finish the fiscal year with a reserve of more than $1 million, Ralph said.
