Lakewood : Elderly Housing Zone OKd

The Lakewood City Council has accepted in principle a proposal to build a $13.3-million federally subsidized housing project for elderly residents, despite the objections of several nearby homeowners and the owner of a construction company that abuts the proposed site.

After a hearing Tuesday, the five-member council voted unanimously to accept a staff recommendation to rezone the land at 3120 South St. to permit multifamily residential construction.

The zoning change paves the way for Calmark Construction Co. to proceed with a 201-unit affordable housing complex for elderly residents. The city’s Planning Commission is scheduled to meet tonight to review Calmark’s proposal, called the Heritage Park Project, before issuing building permits, city officials said.

The project, sponsored by Corporate Fund for Housing of Culver City, is being funded through the sale of tax-exempt bonds issued by the county, said Michael Costa, Calmark senior vice president. Heritage Park is one of five housing projects for the elderly that Calmark is planning to build in the county beginning this summer.

The senior housing is opposed by representatives of Sully Miller Contracting Co., which operates a heavy equipment storage yard adjacent to the proposed Heritage Park complex. And some nearby residents complain that the site is inappropriate for a residential complex.
