Santa Monica : Schools to Decide on Survey

Share

The Santa Monica-Malibu Board of Education will decide Monday whether to conduct a controversial health survey of high school students. The survey questionnaire has been criticized by a small but vocal group of parents who argue that the district will use its results to establish a health clinic that would offer family planning.

But school board President Peggy Lyons, who was on the 50-member community advisory committee that recommended the survey, said “the purpose is to find out what the students’ health needs are, that’s all.”

The survey is expected to include a range of questions including such topics as eating habits and sexual experiences. If approved, the survey would be administered to students in grades nine through 12 in late September or early October.
