Local News in Brief : 8 Held in UCLA Protest
Eight people who allegedly broke into UCLA’s Brain Research Institute and barricaded themselves inside to protest the use of animals in research were arrested on suspicion of burglary.
They belong to an anti-vivisection organization called “Last Chance for Animals,” which held a demonstration at the Westwood campus to protest the use of laboratory animals in research at UCLA Medical Center.
Carrying pictures of bloody cats allegedly found in garbage cans outside the research facility, about 100 protesters charged that using animals for medical experiments is unethical and scientifically unnecessary.
The arrests occurred at the Brain Research Institute in the Center for Health Sciences shortly before noon Thursday after the eight allegedly broke down a door and barricaded themselves inside, said UCLA spokesman Rich Elbaum.
