Local News in Brief : Santa Ana : 12 Little Words Delay Effort to Recall Mayor
Organizers of a recall campaign against Mayor Dan Young ran into a stumbling block Thursday when the city clerk invalidated their official notice to the mayor.
City Clerk Janice Guy disqualified the “notice of intention” because a statement outlining their grievances against Young contained 212 words--a dozen more than the 200 allowed for such statements, according to Guy’s assistant, Bill Baron.
The organizers, who have formed a group called Committee Organized for Public Safety, or COPS, served the notice to Young on Monday. They charge that he has neglected public safety concerns in the city.
Under state law, a “notice of intention” must be delivered to the subject of a recall to start that process. Within seven days, the same statement must be submitted to the city clerk’s office, which in turn has 10 days to review it.
Pat Mill, a member of COPS, said the group would revise and refile the notice.
“We’re not going to be stopped by this. We’re going to start over, and it will be a few days later, that’s all,” she said.
